A Story of Almost a Century in Business
1939
Humble Beginnings
Bruno Movrich began working as a thriving paint contractor, working out of his garage, in the Chicagoland area.
1956
Building a Dream
Bruno and his wife Jody opened their first paint and wallpaper retail store by the name of Bruno Movrich Company in the Chicagoland area.
1965
A Business Built on Family
Bruno and Jody’s son, Carl Movrich, joined the family business after graduating from Marquette University.
1976
The First Expansion
The first showroom was opened in Willowbrook, expanding Drapery Connection’s reach and presence across Chicago’s growing western suburbs.
1982
A Shift in Focus
Bruno Movrich Company phased out of selling paint and focused exclusively on custom window treatments and wall coverings.
1983
From Team to Partners
Former employees John Danaher and Bonnie Friedman joined as partners, trusted for their experience in sales, operations, and design during a key phase of growth.
1983
A New Generation
Carl’s daughter, Mimi Harling, grew up in the family business before officially joining the Chicago showroom. After stepping away to gain valuable outside experience, she returned with fresh ideas to help shape the company’s future.
1985
The Family Legacies Continue
Bonnie’s daughter, Susette Kubiak, joined the company in college. After earning her NCIDQ certification and ASID membership, she became the top producer, selling over $1 million annually, while mastering all aspects of the business.
1986
Becoming Drapery Connection
The Chicago showroom relocated to the western suburbs, finding a new home in Hinsdale along with a new name, Drapery Connection, marking the company’s expansion into window covering design.
1990
Expanding to the Western Suburbs
Drapery Connection opened a new showroom in the Wheaton area, marking continued growth and expanding its reach into the western suburbs.
1998
Bringing the Team Together
Drapery Connection established a large corporate location in Downer’s Grove, bringing together their team (office, client services, warehouse team, and installers) under one roof.
2003
Expanding to the Northshore
A new showroom opened in Highland Park, reflecting Drapery Connection’s continued growth and commitment to serving clients throughout the Northshore.
2010
Passing the Torch
With decades of leadership behind them, Mimi and Susette became owners as Drapery Connection planned for the future. Bonnie transitioned to a consulting role, marking a passing of the torch as the next generation officially took the helm
2011
Four Generations Strong
Mimi’s children have continued the family legacy at Drapery Connection, marking four generations in the business. This milestone reflects the company’s deep-rooted commitment to family and tradition.
2020
Expansion Through Partnerships
Drapery Connection opened a new showroom in Old Orchard, deepening its presence in the northern suburbs and collaborating with industry partners to serve new clients.
2020
Rising to the Challenge
Amid the challenges of COVID-19, Drapery Connection adapted with virtual consultations, allowing clients to experience the same custom level of care safely from home, transforming their spaces into personal havens during a difficult time.
2022
Northern Suburbs Expansion
A new showroom opened in Lincolnshire, further expanding Drapery Connection’s reach into the northern suburbs and solidifying our design-forward presence among communities.
2025
The Next Chapter Unfolds
In December 2024, Carl Movrich retired leaving a legacy of growth and family values. Now fully woman-owned, Mimi and Susette continue to honor Bruno and Jody’s vision while embracing a modern future.

SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education)
The DC team came together to support SCARCE’s mission of uplifting local students by donating essential school supplies through a school supply drive. From notebooks to pencils, each contribution helps empower young learners and brightens their educational journey—one thoughtful gift at a time.
Operation Support Our Troops
To honor and give back to our military heroes, our team partnered with Operation Support Our Troops. Understanding that heartfelt words mean the world to those serving, they wrote letters of encouragement and thank you cards to uplift and connect with those on the front lines.
Feed My Starving Children
Our team joined forces with Feed My Starving Children to combat hunger by packing nutritious meals for children in need around the world. Alongside other volunteers, we packed a total of 333 boxes, ensuring life-changing nourishment reaches communities facing food insecurity globally.
Sharing Connections
Our team came together to support Sharing Connections by organizing a toy drive for families in need. Sharing Connections provides new beds, cribs, and gently used furniture to low-income families, and our donations helped brighten the holidays for children and bring joy to households in need.
Chicago’s Mothers Foundation
The DC team came together to support SCARCE’s mission of uplifting local students by donating essential school supplies through a school supply drive. From notebooks to pencils, each contribution helps empower young learners and brightens their educational journey—one thoughtful gift at a time.
